Screaming Eagle stands as a paragon of American winemaking excellence, particularly renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon wines hailing from Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA. Established in the early 1980s, this iconic estate garnered global acclaim under the visionary stewardship of founder Jean Phillips. This release from the 2012 vintage is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and the remaining portion Cabernet Franc. The wine embodies a lavish, opulent, and alluring character, showcasing the signature notes of crème de cassis, white flowers, graphite, and spices.

The 2012 Screaming Eagle is sensational. Still quite deep and intense, the 2012 is revealing itself to be a long-distance runner. Scents of blackberry, grilled herbs, graphite, lavender and mocha are enticing, yet the 2012 remains very young. Imposing tannins and bright, vibrant acids from a year that cooled down at the end of the growing season remain prominent. Screaming Eagle is a rare 2012 that I would continue to cellar, as it is uncharacteristically potent. The best is yet to come. Antonio Galloni9th May 2024

Screaming Eagle

An Iconic Cult Cabernet

An almost mythical name in the wine world, particularly among connoisseurs of fine Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. Screaming Eagle had relatively modest beginnings - in the early 1990s, grape grower Jean Philips decided to ask Robert Mondavi to taste her homemade Cabernet Sauvignon. Mondavi was so enamoured with the dense, full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon she presented that he encouraged her to bottle it as soon as possible. The high quality of the wine, perfect scores from critics and tiny production meant it swiftly became the holy grail for American wine collectors.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard at Screaming Eagle benefits from a rocky substrate and excellent drainage and exposure. The result is fruit that gets plenty of sun to ripen, but a cooling northerly breeze courtesy of the San Pablo Bay. The wines are made in a bold, rich, unapologetically Californian style. Blackcurrent, cigar box, blackerries and violets abound on the nose while the tannins are soft and fine-grained. The estate also produce a second wine, "Second Flight" and a tiny amount Sauvignon Blanc.
