Screaming Eagle is perhaps the most famous California Cult winery of all time and produces one of the most sought-after wines in the world. Sourced from a small, 57-acre vineyard in Oakville, Napa, production of this exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend is supremely limited and older vintages are increasingly rare. The 2006 is composed of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser parts Merlot and Cabernet Franc and exhibits hallmark purity of intense sweet black fruit and incredible spring flower perfume. Marginally less opulent than other vintages, it allows the more savoury nuances of spices, herbs and crushed rocks to shine through, adding beguiling layers of complexity.

(includes 17% merlot) Good full red-ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas of red berries, minerals, brown spices, menthol and tobacco leaf. Pliant, generous and sweet, with lovely depth to the red berry, plum and tobacco flavors. This subtly complex wine rises and expands on the very long back end, dusting the mouth with flavor. Still a bit youthfully tight and in need of patience. A superb vintage for this wine, and a fitting swan song for the old style of Screaming Eagle. The cabernet franc was left out of the wine because it was too drying, noted winemaker Andy Erickson, who made the final blend very late and bottled the wine last September.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2009

Cask sample. Very dark purple. Velvety start, dry finish would sum up this luscious, distinctive liquid. Lush and plush on the nose – this seems richer than the 2004 with a nose of roasted earth. Still very neat, dry and refreshing on the palate. Very, very long yet appetising. Lovely complexity. Finely knit. Definitely not big, bad and OTT – this one really gets the gastric juices going. Screaming Eagle

An Iconic Cult Cabernet

An almost mythical name in the wine world, particularly among connoisseurs of fine Californian Cabernet Sauvignon. Screaming Eagle had relatively modest beginnings - in the early 1990s, grape grower Jean Philips decided to ask Robert Mondavi to taste her homemade Cabernet Sauvignon. Mondavi was so enamoured with the dense, full-flavoured Cabernet Sauvignon she presented that he encouraged her to bottle it as soon as possible. The high quality of the wine, perfect scores from critics and tiny production meant it swiftly became the holy grail for American wine collectors.

The Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard at Screaming Eagle benefits from a rocky substrate and excellent drainage and exposure. The result is fruit that gets plenty of sun to ripen, but a cooling northerly breeze courtesy of the San Pablo Bay. The wines are made in a bold, rich, unapologetically Californian style. Blackcurrent, cigar box, blackerries and violets abound on the nose while the tannins are soft and fine-grained. The estate also produce a second wine, "Second Flight" and a tiny amount Sauvignon Blanc.
