Schrader is a cult Napa producer, and this bottling comes from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville, one of California`s most coveted Cabernet Sauvignon sites and certainly its most famous, producing more 100 point scores than any other. Robert Parker scored this 2004 98 points with a drinking window of 2014-2039. After twenty years this is now fully mature, so expect complex, savoury, earthy notes alongside the black fruits with a smooth, mouth-filling texture and a long finish. Serve with a well-aged steak.
100 Robert Parker
Only perfect wine of the vintage, which Thomas Brown calls the “Schrader Schrader,” is the 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Schrader Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from clones 4, 6 and 337. This was aged in 90% Darnajou and 10% Taransaud barrels. It had the second highest alcohol in the vintage at 14.6%. In possession of everything anyone could want in a wine, this profound effort offers up a bouquet of lavender, cedarwood, creme de cassis, blackberry, subtle smoke and incense. It is broad, full-bodied and opulent with ethereal complexity, remarkable concentration and that indescribable gravitas and nobility that world-class prodigious wines possess. It is the most youthful of this quartet and probably won’t be at its best for another 3-4 years, but it should drink well for at least two decades thereafter. What Thomas Brown and the Schraders believe is their best wine goes into the cuvee called Old Sparky. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Good full ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, licorice, violet and tar, with more new oak showing than in the RBS. Then less pliant and open in the mouth, with considerable power to its dark fruit and mineral flavors. Very chewy young cabernet with a strong backbone for aging, and much less fruit-forward than the RBS. The Clone 4 component is responsible for the wine's muscularity, notes winemaker Thomas Brown, while Clone 6 gives the floral high tones.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2007

In Search of the Perfect Cabernet

Fred Schrader founded Schrader Cellars in 1998 with a goal of making the best Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon possible. Since then, the brand has gained renown for its incredible vineyard sourcing (Beckstoffer To Kalon, Las Piedras, and Georges III) and remarkably gifted winemaker, Thomas Brown. Since its inception, Schrader has achieved a total of thirty-five 100-point scores from the likes of The Wine Advocate, Wine Spectator, Jeb Dunnuck, and James Suckling.

Formally an art dealer, Fred Schrader had long been searching for terroir that would allow him to producer high quality Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa - that search led Fred directly to the office of legendary grape grower W. Andrew Beckstoffer. The partnership began with a small selection of vine rows in the historic Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard - as the partnership great, so did the number of vines available to Schrader and now some of the finest blocks in To Kolan go into Schrader's wines.
