Saxum Vineyards focus on small scale production of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. The James Berry Vineyard is the estate vineyard and is located 10 miles from the Pacific Ocean with an average elevation of 1200ft. 2011 was an unusually cool year and has resulted in an amazingly fresh and ethereal wine, made up of 69% Grenache, 15% Mataro, 13% Syrah, 2% Counoise and 1% Roussanne. It is bright, elegant and refined with ripe berry fruit, exotic spices, dried flowers and wild herbs. This is an exceptional wine full of personality and charm.

Dark red plums, exotic spices, crushed flowers, menthol and new leather are some of the nuances that blossom as the 2011 James Berry Vineyard opens up in the glass. The use of 33% whole clusters adds texture and aromatic complexity in a wine that impresses for its purity. Some of the Grenache was done in concrete, which allows the true personality of the fruit to shine. Hints of tar, game and licorice meld into the expressive finish.Antonio Galloni1st July 2014

Bold Wines from Paso Robles

Founded in 2002, Saxum Vineyards has swiftly risen to become one of California's most respected producers of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro-based wines. Justin and Heather Smith started the winery vinifying fruit from a vineyard planted by Justin's father - James Berry Smith.

The focus is on Rhône Valley inspired blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. In the vineyard, the team aim for low yields and optimum ripeness while the cellar team exercise minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit. Saxum use no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides and production is kept at around 8,000 cases per year across ten different wines. The flagship wine is the James Berry Vineyard Syrah, which regularly collects perfect scores from critics. These are big, bold, concentrated wines - inky and full with ripe fruit flavours overflowing from the glass.
