Notes from the Justin Smith, winemaker - "The 2010 James Berry Vineyard is my personal favorite since the 2007 vintage. It has great concentration and intensity, with tons of red and black fruits jumping from the glass. Because of the cool year and our refined winery techniques, it contains great focus, purity of fruit, and freshness. I think that’s my favorite part. The freshness we captured. In no small part this vibrancy comes from the fact that most of the Grenache was aged in concrete tank, along with the large puncheons. The Mourvedre and Syrah saw time in tight grained French oak, adding some nice layers and richness to the wine."

Readers will have to be patient with the 2010 James Berry Vineyard. Still reticent and very tightly wound, the 2010 is in no mood to show the full breadth of its personality. There is wonderful purity to the Grenache-inflected red toned fruit, even if the wine remains reticent. All of the energy and tension I found in the wine last year remains present. If anything, the 2010 is even less expressive today than it was a year ago. The James Berry is 52% Grenache (done in concrete), 26% Mourvèdre and 22% Syrah.Antonio Galloni1st July 2013

Bold Wines from Paso Robles

Founded in 2002, Saxum Vineyards has swiftly risen to become one of California's most respected producers of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro-based wines. Justin and Heather Smith started the winery vinifying fruit from a vineyard planted by Justin's father - James Berry Smith.

The focus is on Rhône Valley inspired blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. In the vineyard, the team aim for low yields and optimum ripeness while the cellar team exercise minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit. Saxum use no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides and production is kept at around 8,000 cases per year across ten different wines. The flagship wine is the James Berry Vineyard Syrah, which regularly collects perfect scores from critics. These are big, bold, concentrated wines - inky and full with ripe fruit flavours overflowing from the glass.
