The 2014 Broken Stones is an intriguing blend of 41% Syrah, 19% Grenache, 16% Petite Sirah, 13% Mourvèdre, 8% Tempranillo and 3% Roussanne. A very dry vintage resulted in tightly wound and concentrated wines with good minerality, spice and refined tannins.

Brilliant violet color. Heady, mineral-accented aromas of raspberry liqueur, cherry-cola and potpourri, along with a bright mineral overtone that gains strength as the wine opens up. Offers juicy, densely packed red fruit preserve spicecake and floral pastille flavors that unfurl slowly. Shows a suave interplay of power and elegance, displaying velvety texture and firming mineral cut. An extremely long, sappy finish is shaped by smooth, sneaky tannins and features a lingering, exotic suggestion of Asian spices.Josh Raynolds1st November 2017

Bold Wines from Paso Robles

Founded in 2002, Saxum Vineyards has swiftly risen to become one of California's most respected producers of Grenache, Syrah and Mataro-based wines. Justin and Heather Smith started the winery vinifying fruit from a vineyard planted by Justin's father - James Berry Smith.

The focus is on Rhône Valley inspired blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles. In the vineyard, the team aim for low yields and optimum ripeness while the cellar team exercise minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit. Saxum use no chemical fertilisers, herbicides or pesticides and production is kept at around 8,000 cases per year across ten different wines. The flagship wine is the James Berry Vineyard Syrah, which regularly collects perfect scores from critics. These are big, bold, concentrated wines - inky and full with ripe fruit flavours overflowing from the glass.
