Sassicaia 1995 is a notable Supertuscan produced by Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, Tuscany. This vintage predominantly features 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, and is characterised by a deep ruby hue. Aromatically, it reveals notes of dark fruits, dried herbs and a hint of earthy undertones, reflecting the unique terroir of the region. The palate presents a full-bodied experience with defined tannins and a notable acidity that contributes to its structure.

The 1995 Bolgheri Sassicaia still holds court, thank you very much. It reminds me of a grande dame, or a woman of influence and sophistication who lights up the room thanks to her expertly delivered, albeit antiquated charm. The wine's aged evolution is evident as the bouquet releases sure aromas of dried fruit, old spice, saffron and cola. I can't say the aromas reach perfect equilibrium, because they don't. There is a muddled fruit note in there too that subtracts from its purity. The mouthfeel is svelte and lean with finely polished and silky tannins. In fact, the wine's texture shows precision and elegance. Pretty menthol notes appear on the long finish.Monica Larner28th April 2017
Vinous
Dark red. Sappy aroma of blackberry, creme de cassis, chocolate, smoke and nuts. Lush and smooth in the mouth, with a restrained sweetness and a hint of tobacco. Quite firm and structured, but currently showing limited richness. Finishes with substantial, slightly dry tannins. This grew sweeter in the uncorked bottle and may yet blossom with aging. This is rated three glasses in Gambero Rosso.Stephen Tanzer1st January 1999

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
