Arguably the most famous wine in Italy and a globally recognized red wine, Sassicaia holds a special place as one of the original `Super Tuscans’. Since its inaugural commercially available vintage in 1968, Tenuta San Guido has consistently produced wine each year, except for 1969 and 1973. The 1988 vintage boasts an exquisite nose characterized by tertiary notes of cigar box, tobacco leaf, oak, and pine wood, complemented by hints of blackcurrant and cherry. On the palate, it reveals plenty of concentration with cassis at the forefront, accompanied by underripe raspberry, cedar, and nuanced tobacco tertiary notes.

The 1988 Sassicaia is a vintage that I have not tasted for many moons. It is sublime, albeit not one for those seeking the horsepower of the 1985. Showing little maturity in color, it has a divine bouquet, classically styled, almost Médoc-like with dark berry fruit, wild strawberry, cedar and a splash of espresso. Say 90% Bordeaux and 10% Tuscany? The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, beautifully balanced and fairly understated in style, restrained even. Yet it conveys unerring weightlessness in the mouth allied with a sense of composure and stylishness. Very Bordeaux-inspired on the finish, this sublime Sassicaia is drinking perfectly now.Neal Martin1st May 2023

Jewel-red, waves of cured leather, olive paste, undergrowth, rich peaty aromatics, coffee grounds, cedar, this has campfire smoke and crushed rose petals set against luscious grilled red cherry fruits, laced with fennel and a softly enticing tannic architecture that is lace-fine. Seems almost younger than the last time I tasted it in Rome way back in 2016. Today it is impossible to put down, with a freshness and upward lift that stretches out through the palate, carrying you with it, still very much full of life. 40% new oak for ageing, Giacomo Tachis winemaker.Jane Anson16th October 2024

Tenuta San Guido

The Original Super Tuscan

Tenuta San Guido’s flagship red wine, Sassicaia wine, has become a Tuscan icon in its own right. This fine wine, made from a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, is characterized by all the hallmarks that have established it as one of Italy’s standout wines: sumptuous fruit, fine texture, beautiful perfume, and effortless balance. A prototype of Super Tuscan wines, Mario Incisa della Rocchetta decided to experiment with Bordeaux varietals, noting a similarity between the geography of Tuscany and Graves in southwest France.

Early vintages of this iconic Italian wine were only available to taste at the winery. The 1968 vintage was the first Sassicaia wine to be sold to the public, and in 1994, Sassicaia was granted its own official DOC: Bolgheri-Sassicaia DOC. Early vintages received mixed reviews, but the introduction of Tronçais oak barriques in the late 1970s saw a rise in quality that has been maintained ever since. Alongside the Grand Vin, the Tenuta San Guido estate produces a second wine, Guidalberto, and a third wine, La Difese.

Sassicaia's impact on the wine world is profound, exemplifying the fine elegance of Tuscan wine. With a dedication to quality and tradition, Tenuta San Guido continues to set the benchmark for fine wines globally.
