Tokaji Essencia is a decadently sweet wine that is incredibly rare and extraordinarily complex. The 2008 Essencia from The Royal Tokaji Company was produced from botrytised Furmint, Harslevelu and Yellow Muscat grapes hand-harvested between mid-October and mid-November once the berries had completely raisined. According to the Company’s vintage report, 2008 was almost the perfect vintage and produced a harvest of almost unparalleled quality.

In 2016, Neal Martin of The Wine Advocate scored this 97 points and gave it a drinking window of 2016-2100. He described it as “an otherworldly feat of nature” with aromas of “freshly cut tangerines, apricot and orange zest” and a palate “founded upon energy and tension, a silver thread of acidity that cuts through layer upon layer of orange zest, Japanese yuzu, tangerine and honey.”

The latest release, the 2008 Tokaji Essencia from the Royal Tokaji Wine Company, was tasted over a period of three days. It is clearly cut from a different cloth to the 2007, disproving the idea that wines of such extraordinary sweetness conform to type. It is lighter on the nose than the 2007, with freshly cut tangerines, apricot and orange zest. There is a brightness here, a sense of energy. The palate is founded upon energy and tension, a silver thread of acidity that cuts through the layer upon layer of orange zest, Japanese yuzu, tangerine and honey. This is an elegant and you might argue, more "reserved" Essencia compared to the 2007. The alcohol is slightly higher at a "whopping" 4%, a relatively easier Essencia to consume compared to the unctuous previous vintage. While it might not achieve the concentration of the 2007, the 2008 Essencia remains an otherworldly feat of nature. I actually shared the remaining bottle with winemakers from Argentina and Portugal in Hong Kong and they became wide-eyed with amazement. That`s the magic of Essencia. It might constitute blasphemy, but the freshness means you can enjoy this now, or as my drinking window suggests, wait another 100 years, as temporally fantastical as that sounds. Tasted November 2016. (Neal Martin)

The 2008 Tokaji Essencia, a vintage that I have not previously tasted, contains 469 g/l residual sugar with 13.5 g/l acidity. This has higher alcohol, 4.2%, since the berries fermented a little more compared to other years for some unknown reason. Perhaps in direct juxtaposition against other vintages, the 2008 does not quite deliver the same degree of complexity on the nose as it reveals dried honey, elderflower, beeswax and a touch of caramelized pear. The palate is still exquisitely balanced with a keen line of acidity, though it does not have the same bandwidth and tension as other vintages. The 2008 is delicious but not at the same ethereal level. Production totaled 2,906 bottles. (Neal Martin)
