Château Rouget 2009 is a distinctive red wine from the Pomerol appellation, crafted predominantly from Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes. The estate spans 17 hectares, reflecting a commitment to traditional viticulture. The 2009 vintage is noted for its balance, resulting from a successful year marked by favourable growing conditions. Château Rouget, a family-owned property, maintains a legacy in winemaking, producing wines that reflect the complexity of their terroir. This 18ha estate was the first in Bordeaux to be bought by a Burgundian family, the Labruyères, back in 1992. This bottle offers insights into the estate’s approach to viticulture and regional characteristics.

This opulent, sexy 2009 Rouget is composed of primarily Merlot blended with a touch of Cabernet Franc. Sandy, loamy soil notes interwoven with kirsch and Provencal garrigue jump from the glass of this full-bodied, opulent, rich Pomerol. On the nose, the 2009 Rouget felt just a touch subdued at first but opens nicely with concentrated, decadent black fruit; touches of cassis emerge with time. The palate is dense and gains impressive weight in the glass. This is an assertive and quite bold Rouget. It fans out with brio on the finish. This is a typical, slightly brash 2009, showing just a bit of dryness on the aftertaste, but overall better than previous bottles. Tasted blind at Medlar restaurant dinner.

Very thick. Perfumed. Very sweet and opulent and ambitious. A bit of tannin on the end. You could almost stand a spoon up in this. Clinet? Very rich. Pretty alcoholic finish but there is lots of rich fruit, too. (JR)
