Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay 2021 is a Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. This wine shows the tension of the 2021 vintage, with aromas of white peach, grapefruit and a distinct flintiness that mirrors the cool, maritime climate. The palate is layered and rich, yet defined by a bracing acidity that cuts through the concentration, proving that the region can produce wines with the same structural rigour as some of the best sites in Europe.

The 2021 Chardonnay Monte Bello is a satisfying mix of rich, oak-induced framing and a vibrant, balanced texture. Aged in a mixture of American and French barrique, the élevage is apparent with decadent, creamy aromas outlined by notes of citrus curd and oceanic lift. The palate is toasty and ripe in the mid-palate, with hints of crunchy citric energy peering through the edges of the finish. It develops considerable richness with time in the glass, adding popcorn kernel and buttered toast notes. This is a lovely rendition of a consistently singular California Chardonnay. - Matthew Luczy

Rich, flinty and nutty, the 2021 Chardonnay Monte Bello is a voluptuous, curvaceous, rounded wine. It oozes with flickers of reduction, diving into ripe yellow plum, toasted hazelnut, sweet cream butter and a salty core of mineral tension. It could really use a bit more energy to help shoulder all that weight. Nonetheless, it’s admirable in its concentration and richness. The 2021 is an excellent, though not exceptional, edition of Monte Bello Chardonnay. Billy Norris22nd October 2024

Mountain Wines of Distinction

Named after the historic vineyard area of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains has been a byword for fine Californian wine since the early 1960s. Ridge shot to fame in the fabled 1976 Judgement of Paris. It was at this groundbreaking blind tasting that the 1971 Ridge Monte Bello was pitted against some of the most revered First Growths of Bordeaux. It placed fifth. (NB: in a re-enactment of the same tasting held in 2006, Monte Bello 1971 placed first.)

Under legendary winemaker Paul Draper, Ridge Vineyards became renowned for the exceptional quality of its single-vineyard wines. Though Draper has now retired, the estate continues to produce terroir-focused wines with the same commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking techniques. From the fine Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays of Monte Bello to the Zinfandels of Lytton Springs and Geyserville in Sonoma, and all points in between, Ridge Vineyards remains one of the most celebrated names in California wine.
