Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 is a prestigious Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. This wine exploits high-elevation, limestone-rich soils, resulting in a structured, long-lived style achieved through traditional low-intervention methods. This wine displays a savoury tight profile, offering concentrated aromas of cassis, pencil lead, cedar and earth. The palate is linear and structured, showcasing firmness, high acidity and a classic Old World austerity. Magnum format.

My third encounter with the 2011 Ridge Monte Bello in the last year revealed a wine that seems to be aging in reverse. Though the previous two bottles were beginning to mature aromatically, this one seems frozen in time. Today, it is almost shockingly primary and very sinewy. Black cherry, brambly berry fruit, menthol and mocha unfurl in a dark, brooding package that feels decidedly richer than one might expect from this cool growing season in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Though expressive and totally enjoyable today, this showing indicates that the 2011 may very well have more left in the tank than I initially thought. Billy Norris26th September 2025

Mountain Wines of Distinction

Named after the historic vineyard area of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains has been a byword for fine Californian wine since the early 1960s. Ridge shot to fame in the fabled 1976 Judgement of Paris. It was at this groundbreaking blind tasting that the 1971 Ridge Monte Bello was pitted against some of the most revered First Growths of Bordeaux. It placed fifth. (NB: in a re-enactment of the same tasting held in 2006, Monte Bello 1971 placed first.)

Under legendary winemaker Paul Draper, Ridge Vineyards became renowned for the exceptional quality of its single-vineyard wines. Though Draper has now retired, the estate continues to produce terroir-focused wines with the same commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking techniques. From the fine Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays of Monte Bello to the Zinfandels of Lytton Springs and Geyserville in Sonoma, and all points in between, Ridge Vineyards remains one of the most celebrated names in California wine.
