Geyserville, a traditional field blend, intertwines Zinfandel with complementary varieties like Carignane, Petite Sirah, and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre). Each vintage possesses its own distinct and extraordinary character, yet shares common elements of luscious blackberry fruit, ripe plum, rich cherry, and cedar. A remarkably consistent and elegant wine, Geyserville displays exceptional layering, with its unique flavour profile partly attributed to the relatively higher percentage of Carignane in combination with Petite Sirah, distinguishing it from most other Ridge Zinfandels. Known for its impressive aging potential, Geyserville often continues to deliver its beauty well beyond a decade of cellaring. Sold here in half-bottles.
The 2021 Geyserville hits the palate with a burst of dark red/purplish fruit, sweet spice, lavender, chocolate, dried herbs and American oak. I would be in no rush to open the 2021, as it is clearly an infant at this stage. The blend is 76% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 6% Petite Syrah and 2% Alicante Bouschet. Full bottle 1,307 g. 76% Zinfandel, 16% Carignane, 6% Petite Sirah, 2% Alicante Bouschet. First produced in 1966. Expected in December 2022 to age for 14 years. Organic grapes, spontaneous fermentation and malo.
Transparent bright garnet/crimson. A little more vegy influence on the meat component than in the Three Valleys 2021 bottling. Sweet black-cherry aromas on the front palate and still quite dry on the end. Quite restrained at this point, with the Carignane perhaps adding that tightness. Unformed! Mountain Wines of Distinction
Named after the historic vineyard area of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains has been a byword for fine Californian wine since the early 1960s. Ridge shot to fame in the fabled 1976 Judgement of Paris. It was at this groundbreaking blind tasting that the 1971 Ridge Monte Bello was pitted against some of the most revered First Growths of Bordeaux. It placed fifth.
