Ridge Estate Chardonnay 2023 is a distinguished Chardonnay from the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation in California. Established in 1962, Ridge Vineyards is known for its commitment to sustainable farming and non-interventionist winemaking practices. The 2023 vintage benefited from a lengthy, cool growing season, contributing to this wine`s structure and mouthfeel. Flavours of crisp apple and citrus zest emerge alongside subtle minerality. The wine exhibits a firm acidity, balancing its fruit-forward profile. A nuanced finish reveals hints of white peach and a delicate touch of grapefruit pith.

One of the finest expressions of this bottling in recent memory, the 2023 Chardonnay Estate Monte Bello Vineyard was matured mainly in neutral American and French oak with a 20% addition of new wood equally divided between the two origins. It exudes a classically broad, creamy bouquet with notable focus and floral overtones, pleasantly accented by a touch of reduction. The palate is rich and enveloping yet admirably lifted by invigorating acidity that carries through the textural, caramelized finish.

Minimum effective SO2 for this wine (35 ppm at crush, 74 ppm over the course of ageing); pad-filtered at bottling.

Mountain Wines of Distinction

Named after the historic vineyard area of Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains has been a byword for fine Californian wine since the early 1960s. Ridge shot to fame in the fabled 1976 Judgement of Paris. It was at this groundbreaking blind tasting that the 1971 Ridge Monte Bello was pitted against some of the most revered First Growths of Bordeaux. It placed fifth. (NB: in a re-enactment of the same tasting held in 2006, Monte Bello 1971 placed first.)

Under legendary winemaker Paul Draper, Ridge Vineyards became renowned for the exceptional quality of its single-vineyard wines. Though Draper has now retired, the estate continues to produce terroir-focused wines with the same commitment to organic farming and traditional winemaking techniques. From the fine Bordeaux blends and Chardonnays of Monte Bello to the Zinfandels of Lytton Springs and Geyserville in Sonoma, and all points in between, Ridge Vineyards remains one of the most celebrated names in California wine.
