There are currently four separate Gros domaines in Burgundy, all related to each other. Anne Gros, Anne-Françoise Gros, Michel Gros and Gros Frère et Sœur, which is based in Vosne-Romanée. The estate covers 19 hectares of vines, and it is run by Bernard Gros and his son Vincent. This Richebourg Grand Cru comes from a 0.7-hectare parcel that was partially replanted in 1985 and 1989. The 2002 vintage is a well-crafted wine, with an intensely perfumed nose and velvety palate.

Medium red. Highly perfumed, ineffably complex aromas of strawberry, currant, bacon fat, cocoa powder, gunflint, coffee and smoked meat. Dense, sappy and wonderfully intense, with exhilarating flavors of smoked meat, spices, minerals and underbrush. Conveys a powerful impression of soil tones. Builds almost freakishly on the back end, finishing with a kick of spice and a flavor of pink peppercorn. A wonderfully suave, extremely long Richebourg that offers great early appeal but has the spine to develop in bottle for 10 or 15 years.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2005
