Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the iconic Burgundy estate that produces the most exclusive and sought-after wines in the world. The domaine – which takes its name from its most famous vineyard – has a rich heritage that goes all the way back to the 16th century, when it was farmed by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Vivant de Vergy. DRC only produces grand cru wines, including this Richebourg, from a 3.51-hectare parcel. The 2019 vintage offers a fresh, floral aroma profile, marked by red cherries, cranberries and a hint of green leaves. On the palate, the wine is beautifully earthy, complemented by red berries, more cherries and just a dash of spices.

The 2019 Richebourg Grand Cru is a perplexing wine. Tight and austere, the 2019 is not giving up much today. Then again, it is Richebourg. I like the energy, but the 2019 ultimately feels a bit light. The mid-palate is just not filled out. Next to all the other wines in this range, the Richebourg comes across as lacking in depth. I would not be surprised if in some years the team might take the view that this fruit should have been picked a touch later. Or perhaps the Richebourg suffered a bit more through the heat. Today, it is pretty clear the Richebourg is the outlier in 2019.Antonio Galloni30th June 2022
