For many fine wine aficionados, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the pinnacle of wine. Run for many years by the indefatigable Aubert de Villaine, the domaine consists of 25 hectares of biodynamically tended vineyards, all of which are of Grand Cru classification and include some of the greatest terroirs in Burgundy.
The 2004 release was reviewed by Wine Spectator as follows, `This is aromatic, revealing Asian spices and sandalwood. A less opulent Richebourg, yet plump in the context of the DRC `04s, offering red and black cherry, rose and a hint of black pepper flavors. Kicks into gear on the finish, with a long, spicy aftertaste.`

Frankly, I did not expect the 2004 Richebourg Grand Cru to show so well because of the notorious growing season. It has a precise floral bouquet that blossoms in the glass: dark berry and cola, no signs of any greenness, just a mote of leafiness. The palate is very well balanced with wonderful sapidity. It builds wonderfully with touches of white-tipped strawberry and Morello cherry towards the grippy finish. Tender and prolonged, this is deeply impressive. Tasted at the Richebourg vertical dinner in Taipei. Neal Martin17th June 2025
