A real treat for those who enjoy sweet red wines, this outstanding Recioto della Valpolicella is based on a blend of Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. Expect pronounced aromas of chocolate, dried cherries and figs. The palate is full, with high acidity as the backbone, light tannins and a lingering finish. The wine is a natural pairing for nut or custard desserts like Black Forest Cake, chocolate mousse or cherry cobbler.

The 2007 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico A Roberto coats the glass with glycerol-like richness while displaying dusty dried flowers, incense, cloves, pine resin, quince and a lifting hint of camphor. It’s silky in texture yet enlivened by bright acidity, as ripe red fruits give way to hints of grilled orange, exotic brown spices and cocoa. While this is certainly sweet, clocking in at 65 grams per liter of residual sugar, it’s also wonderfully balanced and vibrant from start to finish, tapering off remarkably fresh and perfumed with a bitter twang of coffee and dark chocolate. The 2007 is a thrill-ride rendition of Quintarelli Recioto, which may not last through long-term cellaring, but it will wow collectors over the next 10 to 15 years. The Recioto A Roberto is the only wine in the portfolio that undergoes spontaneous fermentation, and it is also matured completely in small oak barrels. As this was the favorite wine and passion project of Roberto Ferrarini, Giuseppe Quintarelli’s enologist who passed in 2014, the family decided to dedicate the 2007 in his honor. `Eric Guido1st February 2021

The Godfather of Veneto
The Quintarelli estate in the northern Veronese village of Negrar dates back to 1924 and was founded by Bepe’s father, Silvio. Bepe himself took over in the 1950s, orchestrating a quality revolution through his meticulous work in the vineyard and his uncompromising practices in the cellar. The result was wines of such hedonistic deliciousness that they became some of the most sought-after in Italy; those made before Bepe’s death in 2012 especially so.At the still family-run estate, Bepe’s legacy continues through his daughter, Fiorenza, along with her husband, Giampaolo, and their children. The core range of wines are those made in the appassimiento style (ie, with partially sun-dried grapes): the Valpolicella Superiore, Amarone, Rosso del Bepi (essentially an Amarone, but released instead of the Amarone in ‘lesser’ vintages) and Recioto. The Amarone, only released in exceptional years, is matured for fully seven years in old Slavonian oak before release. An Amarone Riserva sees 10 years.
