Owned by luxury fashion house Chanel since 1994, Château Rauzan-Ségla is a Second Growth wine estate located within the Margaux appellation. This release is the 2009 vintage of its flagship wine, a blend composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. A spicy and earthy, with plenty of depth and structure, the wine is in its ideal drinking window now.

A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot, the 2009 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet-colored, with a touch of brick. It needs a lot of swirling and coaxing to bring forward its alluring perfume of kirsch, warm cassis, candied violets, and sassafras, leading to underlying hints of licorice and charcoal. The medium-bodied palate is an exercise in grace and seamlessness, with incredibly plush tannins and well-knit freshness supporting the fragrant fruit, finishing long and perfumed. The 2009 Rauzan-Ségla has a classic, reserved but well-defined bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, cedar, light tobacco and violet scents, gradually gaining intensity with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a silky texture, not quite as complex as 2011 but well balanced. The acidity is nicely judged. There is more red fruit towards the candied finish with hints of brown sugar and brown spices. Given my adoration for this Margaux cru, I might have expected more, though it remains a lovely wine. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019
