Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles 2009 is a medium- to full-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Pucelles in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Now led by Brice de la Morandière, Domaine Leflaive is one of the most influential estates in Puligny-Montrachet. The estate focuses almost entirely on white wines made from Chardonnay, including four Grand Cru and four Premier Cru expressions. This particular cuvée comes from Les Pucelles, one of Puligny`s finest 1er Cru vineyards located at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune. "Given how profoundly well the ’09 Combettes was showing, I was perfectly prepared to give that the award for the finest premier cru in the Leflaive cellars this year, but the brilliant Pucelles is even a tiny step up in quality. The 2009 Pucelles offers up another very nicely reserved and bottomless nose of peach, pear, apple, lemon blossoms, beautiful, chalky soil tones and a nice touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very pure on the attack, with a rock solid core of fruit, stung acids and again, laser-like focus on the very, very long and classy finish. It would be a crime to open this bottle before it has had six or seven years of bottle age on it, as though the wine will be great to drink earlier on, it will be nowhere near its magical plateau of peak drinkability. A stunning wine." John Gilman, 2010
Medium yellow. Ripe stone fruit and honey on the nose. Fat and sweet but not quite as large-scaled as the Combettes, showing stone fruit and spice flavors. Best today on the insidiously long finish, which really saturates the palate with flavor. Plenty of verve here; still, I'd serve most of these 2009s a bit cooler than usual.

Fairly deep straw. Not the freshest nose. Relatively heavy and foot-dragging. Solid and big but it does lack a bit of magic and freshness on the nose. Big and muscular and very long. Great weight. Perhaps it is just spiciness? Certainly an unashamed heavyweight. Picked too late? (JR)
