Deep garnet colored, the 2009 Pontet-Canet prances out of the glass with exuberant notes of black cherry preserves, warm cassis, and boysenberries, followed by a powerful perfume of star anise, candied violets, fallen leaves, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with decadently rich, sensuous black berry preserves and exotic spices flavors, backed by a velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. The 2009 Pontet-Canet needs more encouragement from the glass than its peers, but it rewards the imbiber with seductive pure cassis and blackberry fruit, touches of autumn leaves and pencil box. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but fine tannin, a lovely bead of acidity. A harmonious, brown spice and smoke tinged finish fans out with confidence. You could open this now but it still has two more decades of drinking pleasure to give. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
