The 2004 Château Pontet-Canet suggests aromas of black fruits, cedar, cigar box, and damp leaves. It is a plush and concentrated wine, displaying a fruit opulence that defies the difficulties of the vintage. On the palate, black currants, crème de cassis, tobacco, and earthy notes contribute to the richness. The finish is long, marked by robust and gritty tannins. A truly enjoyable Bordeaux from a year that might have been overshadowed by the acclaimed 2003 and 2005 vintages.

The 2004 Pontet Canet was when Alfred Tesseron applied biodynamics on the Merlot for the first time. It has a lifted, red berry, blood orange and graphite-scented nose that is nicely focused, perhaps just a little rustic around the edges. The palate is medium-bodied with a minty opening, fine depth and crisp tannins. It's grippy with an almost spearmint fresh finish that lingers nicely. This is a nimble Pontet Canet overall. Drinking perfectly now. Excellent. Neal Martin6th June 2024

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
