Here is the 2000 vintage of Pauillac Fifth Growth, Château Pontet-Canet. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc. On the nose, good balance between blackberry, strawberry fruit and liquorice notes. Rich but very soft on the palate and an impressive structure composed of soft tannins. Concluding on a beautifully long finish.
93 Vinous
Deep red-ruby. Explosive nose combines raspberry, roasted currant, grilled nuts and exotic spices. Rich, sexy, silky and full in the mouth, with expressive flavors of black raspberry, game, smoke and truffle. Finishes with strong but suave tannins and excellent length. St. JulienStephen Tanzer1st May 2003
17.5 Jancis Robinson
Vibrant deep crimson. More subtle than the 2001 and nicely complex on the nose. Molten texture and very dry flavours – thick and some sweetness and lively finish. Bit sweeter and richer. Lusher. (JR)

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
