Established in 1849, Pol Roger remains family-owned and proudly independent to this day. The first ‘Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill’ was from the 1975 vintage and was released in 1984, with the launch taking place at Blenheim Palace. The exact blend is a closely guarded secret, but it is undeniable that the composition would meet the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated. The 1998 vintage was marked by a cool and wet spring, which delayed flowering and led to a small crop. However, the summer was warm and dry, which allowed the grapes to ripen fully.

The 1998 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill Vinothèque is a fabulous choice for readers who want to enjoy a fully mature Champagne. Apricot jam, spice, baked apple tart, honey, passion fruit, orange marmalade and butter are all beautifully amplified. Readers will find a heady, exotic Champagne that dazzles both the intellectual and hedonistic senses. I would prefer to drink this at the dinner table along a suitably rich, complex dish – maybe lobster or Dover Sole with a lot of butter. Antonio Galloni26th March 2024

Very developed, with a certain musty-cellar funk that delivers mature satisfaction. Fresh green-apple skin adds enough zip and balance, and there is wonderful persistence too. Despite the development of the nose there are a few more years of cellaring potential on the palate. (RH)Richard Hemming19th November 2022

Named after the founder, Pol Roger was the son of a lawyer who started his career as a wine wholesaler. The house he founded and the Champagnes he produced went on to receive the imperial and royal warrants of the Austro-Hungarian court. Today, Pol Roger is one of just a few Champagne houses to have been awarded the

Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill was launched in 1984 as the house's Prestige cuvée. Created in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, a lifelong lover of the Champagne House, the cuvée's style emulates the qualities that he preferred - robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity.
