Poggio Alle Gazze 2023 is a dry white wine from the Ornellaia estate in Tuscany. A blend of mostly Sauvignon Blanc with small portions of Viognier and Vermentino, this bottling is known for its aromatic complexity and structure, showcasing notes of grapefruit, green apple and subtle flintiness, balanced by a creamy texture. It is partially fermented and aged in small oak barrels for complexity, providing a sophisticated, barrel-influenced interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc.

Lime zest, citrus, touch of fennel brings lift and a touch of bitterness, with oyster shell salinity adding breadth and texture. Limestone soils predominantly for this wine, planted with traditional Tuscan varieties, located 5km from the ocean. This is the traditional white of the estate, dating back to 1987, today with Marco Balsimelli director, Denise Cosentino winemaker. Not the easiest of vintages, with a rainy early season and a hot finish, skilfully navigated. 50% in barrel, 25% new oak, plus amphora, concrete vats and wine globes. The next few years will see a rise in production, as the estate has bought east-facing plots at 2,000m, currently planting with both Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon.Jane Anson25th February 2025

The 2023 Poggio alle Gazze, Ornellaia’s Sauvignon Blanc-based white, is bright and nicely focused. Orchard fruit, citrus peel, sage, mint and chalk show lovely energy in a mid-weight style that is quite appealing. I would prefer to drink this over the next few years. There's lovely energy and dimension here. The blend is 53% Sauvignon Blanc, 37% Vermentino, 7% Viognier and 3% Semillon.Antonio Galloni1st February 2025

Ornellaia

A Legendary Super Tuscan

Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the wines of the Ornellaia estate show remarkable consistency and are rightly considered an Italian great. Famed for its legendary Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Super Tuscan wine (blended with a smaller percentage of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia lies near Bolgheri in Tuscany, on the Mediterranean coast. Renowned winemaker Axel Heinz was first appointed in 2002.

Starting with the release of the 2006 vintage in 2009, Ornellaia has produced the highly coveted Vendemmia d'Artista series; a celebration of the unique character of each new vintage in which a contemporary artist creates a work of art and a series of limited edition labels drawing inspiration from the single word chosen by the winemaker to describe the character of the new vintage. Celebrated contemporary artists have included Shirin Neshat, William Kentridge and Ernesto Neto.

The Ornellaia estate also produces a beautiful white wine, Ornellaia Bianco, which is a white blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier; the superb Sauvignon Blanc-dominant Poggio alle Gazze; a beautiful red Mediterranean expression known as Le Volte dell'Ornellaia; the 'second' red wine, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia and a late harvest Petit Manseng sweet wine known as Ornus.
