Pichon-Lalande 2000 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Second Growth Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Often referred to as a `Super Second`, Pichon-Lalande is situated adjacent to the First Growth of Château Latour and often attracts favourable comparisons with its illustrious neighbour. The property`s 2000 grand vin is an assemblage of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc. "Very, very dark crimson. Scented. Lead pencil. Smooth - not a rough edge in sight. Very well done! Low key compared to Longueville Baron, but very good. Super-smooth and suave. " Jancis Robinson MW, 2005

A knockout wine that competed for the bottle of the tasting. At 24 years old the tannins still place you firmly in Pauillac, as do the lush cassis and grilled blueberry fruits, and the layers of liqourice root, cigar, campfire, and sandalwood. 50% new oak. Harvest September 21 to October 9. Owned in 2000 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who had been in place since 1978 and remains at 98 years old one of the great figures of Bordeaux. Thomas Doh Chi Nam was technical director, as he was from 1992 through to 2011. It's been three years since I last tasted this vintage, and it's even better than it was then, really a wine to celebrate.Jane Anson13th March 2024

The 2000 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has a strong minty bouquet that perhaps slightly overwhelms the terroir expression. I believe this comes from a high proportion of Petit Verdot (14%) that would have probably been eschewed nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with intense black plummy fruit mixed with graphite and sage. This is a muscular though enjoyable Pichon, dense and almost brawny toward the finish, but what is missing is a sense of elegance and precision. Just a touch of greenness shows on the finish (in a positive way). A forceful Pauillac that will benefit from decanting. Neal Martin1st September 2021

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
