Château Pichon Baron 2008 is a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Owned by the French insurance company AXA since 1987, Château Pichon Baron is a Second Growth estate situated in the Pauillac appellation. Oft described as a ‘classic Pauillac’ due to its style and terroir, its Grand Vin features powerful dark fruits, and is built to age for many decades. "As you would expect, this turns up the bass on its neighbour. It`s a full-throttle display with a powerful dark undertow, approaching peak-Pauillac. It is wonderfully balanced, with flavours of graphite, dark plum, coffee and grilled rosemary, and the tannins are so well structured, fine and layered. It`s a great wine in an average year, showing its pedigree and easily among the best in the appellation in 2008." Decanter, 2017

The 2008 Pichon-Baron has a much better bouquet than the 2007 (as you would expect), replete with blackberry, blueberry, minerals and graphite that are all very well defined and focused. The oak here is superbly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, and full of tension and energy. It builds nicely in the mouth, delivering real brightness and vivacity on the finish but retaining that sense of subtle Pauillac austerity. In many ways this is quintessential Pichon-Baron and one of the overachievers in recent years. It comes highly recommended. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. A sleeper of the vintage, the 2008 Pichon Longueville Baron is one of the densest, most concentrated wines of Pauillac in 2008. An inky/purple color is followed by aromas and flavors of creme de cassis, blackberries, charcoal, coffee and licorice. Exceptionally full-bodied with velvety tannins and undeniable appeal, this gorgeous, well-proportioned, larger than life 2008 should age effortlessly for two decades or more. Grilled caramel and liqourice on the nose, plump blackberry and blackcurrant fruits, sinewy tannins with touches of pencil lead and black chocolate. This is signature Pauillac but an enticing version that welcomes you in. The Merlots make their impact here, because they were of such great quality in this vintage, fleshy and supple, giving width to the mid palate. 80% new oak. A Super Second Classed Growth
Château Pichon Baron is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which comes from the oldest vines grown on the historic plots of the estate. A beautiful red, displaying a superb black fruit profile with spicy hints. Château Pichon Baron shows great elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. A well-balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The Château also produces two second wines, the Cabernet-focused Les Griffons de Pichon Longueville and the Merlot-dominant Les Tourelles de Pichon Longueville. The 73 hectare estate is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
