Philipponnat Clos des Goisses 2000 is a prestige-cuvée vintage Champagne from a single vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. This legendary site is one of the steepest in the region, with a 45° incline and pure chalk soils that produce wines of immense structural power and mineral tension. The 2000 vintage has evolved into a wine of great autolytic complexity, offering a bouquet of roasted nuts, dried apricots, honey and sea spray. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and intensely concentrated, driven by a vibrant acidity that provides incredible lift to the rich, vinous texture, finishing with a persistent, chalky minerality and a long, savoury tail.

Philipponnat`s 2000 Clos des Goisses is an excellent choice for drinking today, as there is less upside than in some of the other surrounding vintages. This is a distinctly savory Goisses with more than enough phenolic weight and richness to support many years of cellaring, although I do not expect to see a lot of improvement from here. Hints of sage and mint add nuance on the close. The 2000 is a beautiful and highly expressive Goisses, but its place in the hierarchy of vintages is quite apparent in this epic tasting. Champagne tradition with a modern twist

Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Philipponnat is a historic Champagne house that has been owned by the Lanson-BCC group since 1997. It was the first Champagne producer to clearly label its bottles with the main year used in a blend, along with the dosage and date of disgorgement. Among the Philipponnat range, the house's Royal Réserve Brut is a classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with up to one-third of the blend coming from two ‘perpetual reserves’. This cuvée offers the perfect introduction to the house style. Royal Réserve Non Dosé and Rosé expressions are also made.

Cuvée 1522 commemorates the year when the Philipponnat family first began cultivating vineyards in the village of Aÿ. The blend typically consists of approximately 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, with the majority of the grapes sourced from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. The most powerful Champagne in the house's portfolio is Clos de Goisses, a prestige cuvée produced using grapes grown in a single walled vineyard on a pure chalk, south-facing hillside in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
