Petrus is often considered the pinnacle of the Pomerol appellation and is undoubtedly one of the most revered wines in the world. The style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages it often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. It is an exceptionally long-lived wine and can often require significant cellaring before reaching maturity and expressing its true essence.

Once again the 2000 vintage offers a remarkable expression of Pomerol. It is incredibly concentrated and opulent in texture yet exhibits impeccable balance and admirable freshness. Now only just entering its prime drinking phase, this can certainly be expected to continue to evolve over the next few decades.

The 2000 Petrus was served blind as an extra in an already formidable line-up. Deep, inky in hue, it has an intense nose of black and red fruit laced with pencil shavings and black truffle, the latter more prominently featured vis-à-vis previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied, one of the most youthful examples that I have encountered, perhaps more masculine. Superb backbone here, grippy with that broody finish it exhibited a couple of years back. What you might call a "slow burner". Tasted at Epure restaurant in Hong Kong (again). How could this not make it to my Wines of the Year list? Tasted back in March, when I became the only journalist at what has to be the wine event of the year - the unveiling of a bottle of Petrus that had spent 438 days on the International Space Station. We compared it against the same bottle that had remained on Earth, and in the interest of actually suggesting wines you might be able to get hold of, this tasting note comes from the terrestrial version. It's a wine that feels like an occasion in itself, so nuanced and effortlessly impressive. Still young even at 21 years old, although now showcasing the waves of rose petal, violet and peony aromatics that only really come out in Petrus once it has had serious bottle age. The palate is pure velvet - blackberry, black cherry and bilberry fruits penned in by muscular but welcoming tannins, all finishing up with black pepper and a hit of spiced chocolate shavings. 50% new oak.Jane Anson1st December 2021

Classy and lively. Actually tastes like classic claret – definitely the odd one out when compared blind with other right-bank wines. Quite dry tannins underneath. Quite cheesy. Very chewy and lively. Prancing and brisk. Edge of coconut. Particularly fine tannins. Long. Refreshing. Very dry finish. (JR)

The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
