This is the elegant second wine from Château Mouton Rothschild, the iconic First Growth estate located within the Pauillac appellation. The 2009 vintage is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged in 60% new oak. The wine is ready to be enjoyed now. juicy, fruity and well-rounded with very fine, ripe tannins and a fresh medium-long finish. Punching well above its second vin status.

The 2009 Le Petit Mouton has a classic smoke and cigar box scented bouquet with more undergrowth scents than I was expecting given the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, impressive balance, enticing cedar-infused black fruit with pencil lead and sage towards the composed and quite persistent finish. This is evolving into an excellent Le Petit Mouton. Tasted at BI Wines & Spirits' Ten Years On tasting.

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc – one of the highest proportions of Cabernet Franc. Very solid and rather arresting on the nose. Then just a little rustic on the palate. Chewy tannins – not the ultra-suppleness of, say, Carruades and Les Forts. More of an obvious second wine? Rather drying tannins on the finish. (JR)

Wine as Art

The prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild estate is home to the world-renowned First Growth of the same name, in addition to a second red wine, Petit Mouton and a white wine, made in smaller quantities, known as L'Aile d'Argent. Established in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, the Château pioneered the idea of bottling their own wine in the 1920s while other properties were still selling and exporting in barrel. A Second Growth until 1972, the winery was officially elevated to the high rank of Bordeaux classification in 1973 after much campaigning by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild.

Cabernet Sauvignon that takes pride of place in the wines of Mouton Rothschild, with smaller percentages of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cabernet Sauvignon always predominates in the Mouton red, giving the wine its rich tannins, wealth of aroma, flavour and superb ageing capacity. Meanwhile Merlot, an inseparable companion, brings suppleness, roundness and exceptional length.
