The Peter Michael Ma Belle-Fille Chardonnay 2007 is a full-bodied Sonoma white wine that showcases a rich complexity typical of its vintage. It exhibits aromas of ripe stone fruits, including peaches, alongside citrus notes. The wine reveals a pronounced oak influence, contributing nuances of roasted nuts and subtle smokiness. Full-bodied and structured, it offers a lengthy finish. Peter Michael Winery, founded by Peter and Daria Michael in 1987 in Sonoma County, prioritises meticulous viticulture and winemaking processes, striving to express the unique terroir of their estate vineyards. This magnum format allows for slower evolution in the bottle.

Another brilliant effort is the 2007 Chardonnay Ma Belle Fille. Filled with notes of pineapples, honeyed melons, nectarines, and white currants, it reveals more toasty oak than its siblings as well as a smoky, roasted nut character. This full-bodied, utterly profound Chardonnay could easily pass for a Batard-Montrachet from France. Brothers Nicolas and Luc Morlet told me that 2008 was one of the smallest crops they have encountered, largely because of the late spring frosts, and windy conditions during flowering. Yields were low, but the quality was among the highest they have ever seen for Chardonnay, with a level of concentration reminiscent of the 2002s. As I indicated in issue #180, Peter Michael’s 2007 Chardonnays are spectacular. Production is about 30% higher per cuvee than in 2008, and these are exquisite efforts with lots of uplift, minerality, zesty aromatics, and refreshing acids. This year I should have a chance to taste the estate plantings from the huge investments Sir Peter Michael has made in Pinot Noir vineyards on the Sonoma Coast. In the meantime, here are some interesting efforts from sites where they contract for fruit. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

Green-gold. Deep, smoky aromas of pear skin, peach pit, iodine and anise, with a strong floral overtone. Sweet tangerine and pear flavors stain the palate and pick up salty minerality on the back end. Becomes richer with air, taking on pit fruit and toasted grain qualities and finishing with impressive grip and mineral thrust. This vineyard, which is situated at 2,000 feet, was planted between 1998 and 2000.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2009

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
