Founded in 1983, Peter Michel Winery is a boutique producer of phenomenally high-quality Californian wines made in the model of the great wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Les Pavots is the flagship red blend and comes from a single rocky vineyard planted at 900-1,400ft elevation in the Knights Valley AVA, Sonoma County. The 2003 is a perfumed, mineral-tinged and velvety blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.
93 Vinous
(15.1% alcohol, 4.03 pH) Full medium ruby. Cassis, dark chocolate, licorice and flowers on the nose. Lush, broad and wonderfully ripe but classically dry, with terrific intensity of currant, chocolate, cedar and leather flavor. Distinctly suave wine, finishing with broad, dusty, building tannins and excellent length. And not at all flat despite the extravagant pH.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2006

Inspired by the Médoc and Côte d'Or

Peter Michael Winery was founded by British businessman Sir Peter Michael in the early 1980s with a singular vision - to make wine in the terroir-driven tradition of Burgundy and Bordeaux, under the California sun and in California soil. The winery currently produce around fifteen wines using four varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Consistency and quality are the watchwords here - the wines are clearly inspired by the poise and precision of their Old World counterparts but can't help expressing an edge of Californian excess - ripe fruit abounds on the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while the Cabernet Sauvignons have a density and concentration that many Bordelais would envy.
