Penfolds Grange 2009 is an Australian Shiraz blend, crafted to represent the esteemed flagship of Penfolds in a magnum format. The 2009 vintage in South Australia yielded firm and structured reds, benefiting from optimal slow maturation in the larger bottle. Its dense, purple hue invites an exploration of aromatics featuring blackcurrant, dark spices and hints of mocha. The palate is full-bodied and robust, underpinned by substantial, resolved tannins. Penfolds, established in 1844, is known for its pioneering role in Australian winemaking, with Grange firmly rooted in the tradition of blending Shiraz with other varietals, showcasing regional terroir.

The 2009 Penfolds Grange included just 2% of Cabernet Sauvignon and has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It gallops out with notes of prunes, raspberry preserves, and fruit cake, followed by hints of licorice, coffee beans, and cigar boxes. The full-bodied palate delivers lots of savory and mineral layers with well-knit acidity and with a slight, not unpleasant, chewiness to the texture, finishing savory.Lisa Perrotti-Brown9th August 2023

Vibrant and concentrated black cherry and damson flavours, still young, edges of cigar box and sandalwood. There would have been a difference in the way the team worked with the tannins from a decade earlier, with a little barrel ferment and softer extraction methods (components were made at Magill still in the old basket press for the part of Grange that comes from this site). (98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Inky ruby. Intense spice- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and plum, with smoke and floral qualities adding complexity. Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering zesty dark fruit and violet pastille flavors and hints of licorice and vanilla. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with youthfully firm, building tannins adding grip. In a relatively taut, wound-up style for this wine; by all means give it some age.Josh Raynolds1st July 2014

The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy. 98% Shiraz, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Magill Estate. TA 6.6 g/l, pH 3.53. 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads.>
Inky core with blackcurrant rim. Gorgeously seductive perfume. sweetly spiced – Christmas spice – fruit with the sweetness of oak but all so well entwined. There`s a hint of tar and savoury character. On the palate, creamy, vanilla, rich and so gentle and polite – or so it seems, though there is plenty of muscle underneath. 100% new oak. `No other way to make Grange`, says Gago. Lots of sweet US oak flavour on the finish. Sweet baking spice too and some liquorice. Vanilla sweetness. Concentrated and dry and pressed down even though it is so young. Opens up to lovely perfume again. More savoury on the nose than on the palate. Thick and deep. Coming back to it half an hour later. more savoury, somehow squashed on the palate. Tannins remarkably smooth. Chocolate all the way. Freshness and really great length. (JH)
