Penfolds Grange 2003 is a blend primarily of Shiraz, featuring a small proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 15 months in new American oak, this vintage presents a dark, opaque appearance. Aromas of ripe plum, chocolate and smoke emerge, complemented by notes of vanilla and toasty oak. On the palate, it reveals a structured mouthfeel, though it may lack significant complexity and persistence. Penfolds, established in 1844, is renowned for its innovative approach to winemaking, often merging traditional methods with modern techniques.

Inky purple. Seductively perfumed nose offers cassis, blueberry, cherry-cola, violet and dried fig scents, with a suave undercurrent of smoky minerals. Deep, finely etched cherry and dark berry flavors are complicated by mocha and candied licorice, becoming riper with air. Cured meat and black cardamom notes arrive with air, adding further interest. Full, fleshy and sweet on the impressively long finish, which is nicely braced by dusty tannins. This is more energetic than most wines from this vintage.Josh Raynolds1st September 2008
