Château Margaux Pavillon Rouge 2003 is a mature-vintage Cabernet Sauvignon blend from the Bordeaux appellation of Margaux. Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of the Bordeaux First Growth Château Margaux. With 82ha of vineyards (75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot), Château Margaux is the leading property in the village of Margaux. The estate produces around 30,000 cases of wine annually, the second wine accounting for around 25% of that total. "Also a stunning wine, the 2003 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux is a sleeper of the vintage. Much fresher and less evolved than I would expect a second wine to be from this vintage, it is a Margaux-like effort with a flowery character, good precision and freshness, red and black currant notes, and an attractive, medium-bodied, surprisingly concentrated mouthfeel. The 2003 Pavillon Rouge has a respectable bouquet with brambly red fruit, orange rind, freshly-rolled tobacco and peppermint. This is actually fresher than some Grand Vins tasted. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins on the entry, raspberry, strawberry and a touch of white pepper. It has a slightly savory finish. Smooth and very drinkable. À point. Château Margaux is one of the most striking constructions in the Bordeaux appellation, a large grand house built in the early 18th century on an estate that has been producing fine wine for hundreds of years, with a history dating back to the 12th century Bordeaux wine tradition. Quality was known to fluctuate in the first half of the 20th century, but that period of inconsistency ended with the arrival of wunderkind Paul Pontallier, a talented winemaker who worked nearly 35 vintages and produced some of the greatest wines in living memory.
