`Château Pavie Macquin 2008 is a full-bodied Merlot-based red wine from the St-Emilion appellation of Bordeaux. Château Pavie Macquin is a prestigious Premier Grand Cru Classe B estate located in Saint Emilion. Under the guidance of the formidable winemaking consultancy duo Stephane Derenoncourt and Nicolas Thienpont, Pavie Macquin has emerged as one of the leading Right Bank properties of recent years. Thienpont introduced organic and then biodynamic winemaking in the vineyards, a focus on which has contributed greatly to the tension and concentration of the wines. "The 2008 Pavie-Macquin was decanted for 60 minutes before pouring. It is surprisingly backward on the nose and demanded another 30 minutes to really open, offering luscious scents of black cherry, boysenberry, crushed violet and light camphor scents that recede with continued aeration. The palate is still concentrated with layers of black fruit tinged with dark chocolate, a little heady in style but retaining sufficient balance to uphold its freshness. It is a feisty and extrovert Pavie-Macquin that feels undiminished at a decade out and in fact, I would afford bottles another four or five years to allow more terroir expression and secondary notes to develop. This has enormous potential, but winemaker Nicolas Thienpont produced a wine for those with patience." Neal Martin, 2018

The 2008 Pavie-Macquin is fabulous. An exceptionally beautiful wine, the 2008 is positively stellar. In the glass, the 2008 is aromatically deep, silky and vibrant. The year was marked by an extremely long growing season with an early start and a late harvest that kept getting pushed back because of unusually cool nights. The tannins in 2008 were austere and needed patience at first. This is earthy, a little less precise in its aromatics than others in the lineup, given a punch of personality with a great slug of liqourice. A wine that is edging forward extremely slowly, angular tannins hugging tightly on to the limestone minerality. Juicy finish, so mouthwatering, you feel the tightrope walk between acidity and tannins, and the power builds through the palate, opening up to show blackcurrant pastilles, cocoa bean and gunsmoke. This was a very late harvest, heading into the third week of October, after one of the longest growing seasons on record. Part of the classic vintages series within this vertical, and it really lives up to billing.Jane Anson21st January 2022

Bright healthy crimson. Rich, juicy, succulent fruit. Really appetising. Lots of ripe fruit plus lots of acid and ripe tannin. Truly a youthful, but promising, package. Well done! Maybe just a tad too tart? Or maybe this will keep it going splendidly for the long life it deserves. (JR)
