Château Pavie is one of the leading producers of Saint-Émilion covering approximately 37 hectares under vine. In 2012 the property was upgraded to the first rank of the Classification of Saint-Émilion as a Premier Grand Cru Classé [A], a position that it managed to hold in 2022. This release is from the 2009 vintage, a blend of 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in 80% new oak. It is a full-bodied, opulent wine, with layered fruit and firm tannic structure. Absolutely superb.

Deep garnet with a touch of purple, the 2009 Pavie is quite closed to begin, needing a lot of shaking to bring out a powerful notes of blueberry pie, Black Forest cake, and cinnamon toast leading to a fragrant undercurrent of rose oil, licorice, and clove oil. The full-bodied palate is built like a brick house, with a firm frame of velvety tannins and fantastic tension framing the generous fruit, finishing with epic length and depth. It needs 5-7 years at least.Lisa Perrotti-Brown13th December 2023

The 2009 Pavie has a gorgeous bouquet, very pure and refined with seamlessly integrated oak and wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, perfectly judged acidity. Fine grip with compelling tension on the finish. This shimmers with energy. Easily, this is the best bottle that I have encountered over the years. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners’ 2009 Bordeaux tasting. Neal Martin1st March 2019

Blackish crimson. Minerals and lively and FRESH!! Juicy and gouleyant and eye-catching but with sufficient juice and not too dry on the end. Really tastes as though it comes from an interesting slope. Sun dried but not to excess. (This note was written when I tasted it blind while the other, made later that same day, was written at the property tasting sighted.) (JR)

A Decadent St-Emilion

Situated to the south-east of the town of St-Emilion, Pavis is the largest 1er Grand Cru Classé property in the commune with over 35 hectares of vines. The vineyards themselves are ideally situated on the south facing slopes of a limestone plateau for excellent exposure, ensuring optimal ripeness in the right conditions. Since the late 1990s, the Grand Vin has been a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Cabernet France and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented in wooden vats and aged in 100% new oak for 18 months. The wines are bottled unfiltered for added concentration and texture.

Pavie was purchased in 1998 by Gérard Perse who has, assisted by consultant oenologist Michel Rolland, pushed the wines towards a bolder, more concentrated style with a focus on concentrated fruit on the palate and an expressive nose.
