Jayson Pahlmeyer planted his vineyard in 1981 using “suitcase clones” allegedly smuggled from France. His founding philosophy was to create a “California Mouton” and he has undoubtedly secured his winery’s reputation as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux varieties in Napa. 2003 was a tough vintage for many but this is a superb release of the flagship Proprietary Red composed of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot with lesser parts Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec.

The 2003 Proprietary Red has aged beautifully. Smoke, tar, incense, plum and licorice notes take shape nicely in the glass. The 2003 boasts gorgeous depth and intensity, not to mention considerable freshness for the year and its age. Readers can look forward to another 5-10 years of prime drinking here.
