The 1979 vintage marked the first release of Opus One, a joint venture between pioneering Californian winemaker Robert Mondavi and the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The 2009 vintage is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot, 3% Merlot and 1% Malbec aged for 17 months in new French oak. Aromas of black olive and minerals underlie more traditional notes of dark chocolate, cola and espresso. Showing flavours of ripe blueberry, cassis and liquorice, concluding on a smooth finish with a slight grip of tannin at the close. Sold in glorious large format.

Love the crayon, pencil lead, cocoa bean dominance, along with fragrant peony and iris flower aromatics. Lean black fruit, cassis bud and rose stems, focusing on fragrance and spice. Tannic structure is gentle, almost entirely integrated at 15 years old, and it is in a sweet spot for drinking. Less concentrated than some. Harvest September 21 to October 20 after a record rainy month, 20 days skin contact. Michael Silacci director. Opus picks relatively early for Napa, and so had most of the grapes in the cellar before the second round of rain came.Jane Anson26th June 2025

Bright, dark red with ruby highlights. Very dark aromas of black cherry, cassis, blueberry and licorice. Then rather plush, sweet and full for Opus One, conveying a chocolatey ripeness to its dark berry flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins that build without going dry. This wine was broad and smooth from the outset. Today it's a generous mouthful but a bit clunky compared to some more recent vintages. This was reportedly the first vintage to include a significant percentage of Petit Verdot, and that may explain the wine's emphasis on black and blue fruits. A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
