Opus One 2004 is a Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Valley, encapsulating the characteristics of a good Californian vintage. The 2004 growing season provided conditions conducive to balanced wines, with the half-bottle format promoting earlier maturation. This blend predominantly features Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It exhibits a deep ruby hue with aromas of blackcurrant, leather and subtle notes of oak. Opus One winery, co-founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, aims to marry the best of Californian and Bordeaux winemaking traditions.

The colour here is iridescent plum, with enveloping aromatics. Velvety tannins, rich cocoa bean, liquorice, dark cherry, balanced, juicy, precise, mouthwatering, concentrated. Delivers the signature of a fabulous Napa Cab that it is in stride without pushing too far, and has held up exceptionally well at 21 years old. Michael Silacci wineamaking director, and from this vintage Opus becomes a fully independent estate, with its own vineyard crew, and its own team in the cellar. 100% new French oak, harvest from early September to October 1.Jane Anson26th June 2025

The 2004 Opus One is the first wine in this vertical that is still completely primary. Juicy, layered and expressive, the 2004 needs at least five more years in the cellar to shed some of its youthful exuberance, but frankly that may not be enough. There is a lot of promise here. The blend is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. Antonio Galloni1st June 2013

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
