Opus One 2008 is a product of a partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, aimed at blending Old World and New World winemaking philosophies. The 2008 vintage is characterised by extreme weather variations, resulting in a reduced yield. This wine comprises 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec. It exhibits aromas of rose petal, cassis and black cherry, alongside hints of marzipan and sandalwood. The palate reveals smooth tannins and a balancing acidity, culminating in a lengthy finish with subtle notes of clove and dark chocolate.

Rich, deep and inviting plum colour, clear texture and concentration, this has really softened and opened up since I last tasted it in 2019, now full of energy and reserved power. This was the year that Bob Mondavi died, and that director Michael Silacci was working on introducing dry farming across the vineyard. Final year before Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy, viticulturist and assistant winemaker, returned to Bordeaux, where he is now winemaker of Mouton Rothschild. 100% new oak for ageing.Jane Anson26th June 2025

(14.6% alcohol): Saturated red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco, spices and rose petal, plus a whiff of smoked meat. Lovely juicy, fine-grained wine in a very firm style, offering an attractive balance of acidity and sweetness. Not especially expansive in the middle palate owing to a slight herbal streak but this wine should yet soften with more time in bottle. Certainly has the spine of dusty tannins to go on for another 12 to 15 years. In a restrained style, and perhaps passing through an awkward phase, but the fruit was very ripe here in '08 as the crop level was low and the harvest began during a heat spike. A touch of menthol accentuates the tannins today. Stephen Tanzer1st May 2018

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
