Opus One 2003 is a structured, Bordeaux-style blend from Napa Valley, showcasing the intensity typical of this warm vintage. Opus One winery, co-founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, aims to marry the best of Californian and Bordeaux winemaking traditions. The vineyard sits in the Oakville AVA, known for its distinctive terroir. This wine is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It possesses a deep ruby hue and exhibits notes of blackcurrant, dark chocolate and herbal nuances. The palate is full-bodied and dense, characterised by firm tannins and a lingering finish.

Deep plum colour, as with so many of these it is deep and inviting but retains nuance. In the sweet spot for drinking, not as concentrated as some, waves of tobacco and autumnal leaf, white pepper and fennel, cranberries, sage and loganberry fruit, with grilled almonds. Soft landings but moreish and mouthwatering. 100% new French oak for ageing, harvest September 17 to November 2. The yields here were the highest of the decade, cropped at 5 tons per acre instead of the usual 4 ton. This was the last vintage where the families were directly involved in the blending, and the last one with Patrick Leon and Tim Mondavi as co-winemakers.Jane Anson26th June 2025

The 2003 Opus One is still pretty young for a wine of its age. Cedar, leather, tobacco, incense, dried herbs and menthol lend notable savory nuance throughout. The 2003 is not the biggest Opus One, but it is a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. At twenty years of age, it is in fine shape but not likely to improve significantly. This is an especially good bottle. Antonio Galloni9th May 2024

A First Growth in Napa

Known as NapaMedoc for the first three vintages and rebranded in 1982 as Opus One, this iconic Californian winery was founded as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. The objective was to recreate a First Growth level, Bordeaux style wine in the Napa Valley and by every measure, they succeeded. The Grand Vin is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot and is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak before being laid down for a further 18 months to mature in bottle. Since 1993, they have produced a second wine, Overture.

The winemaker is Micheal Silacci who apprenticed under legendary Napa winemakers Andre Tchelistcheff and Warren Winiarski and previously held positions at Beaulieu Vineyard and Stag's Leap Wine Cellars.
