West Sussex-based English Sparkling Wine specialist, Nyetimber, have forged a reputation as one of the UK’s preeminent producers. The Classic Cuvée is their flagship multi-vintage blend and is the perfect all-occasion drink. It is a Chardonnay dominant blend with lesser portions of Pinot Noir and Pinot, including around 20-35% of reserve wine. Aged extensively in their cellars before release, it deftly combines delightful notes of fresh citrus and baked orchard fruits with subtly toasty and spicy nuances.

Disgorged in January 2020, the new release of Nyetimber`s NV Brut Classic Cuvée is based on the 2015 vintage, complemented by 20% reserve wines dating back to 2009. Offering up aromas of honeycomb, apple blossom, warm pastry, candied peel and nougat, it`s medium to full-bodied, seamless and pillowy, with a pretty core of fruit, bright acids and an elegant pinpoint mousse.

The NV Classic Cuvée based on the 2015 vintage was bottled in April 2016 and disgorged in February 2020, and is the current release. This is very different from the 2014, featuring scents of mango, orange pith and lemon verbena and just a hint of white tea in the background. The palate is rounded and has much more weight than the 2014 base blend, the lower acidity (pH 3.28) imparting a tropical feel toward the finish, which maybe just lacks the nervosité of the 2014. (February 2020 disgorgement)

50-60% Chardonnay, 30-40% Pinot Noir, 10-20% Pinot Meunier.
Prominent apple, brioche and saline aromas with great persistence and purity. Still a beacon of reliability in its 30th year. Superbly drinkable – even though the acid is brisk, it offers great balance of body and dosage. Finely crafted. (RH)

World Class Sparkling Wine

Having planted its first vines in West Sussex in 1988, Nyetimber was one of the forerunners of the fine English sparkling wine boom, producing traditional method sparkling wines from estate-grown Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes.

Based in the village of West Chiltington in a lea of the South Downs, Nyetimber owns vineyards in West Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, where the geology and soils – principally the same chalk seam which runs under Champagne, along with greensand – are particularly suited to producing world-class sparkling wines.

Head winemaker Cherie Spriggs and her winemaker husband Brad Greatrix work with meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards to ensure optimum fruit quality, while in the cellar, extended ageing and the benefit of an extensive collection of reserve wines ensures that each bottle leaving the winery displays a complexity and finesse which makes Nyetimber a benchmark producer of English sparkling wine.
