Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Vaucrains Jean Chauvenet 2011 is a Premier Cru from the steep, stony slope above Les Saint-Georges, long regarded as one of the appellation’s most muscular terroirs. In 2011 Chauvenet achieved a more supple balance than usual, with the domaine’s traditional destemming and cool maceration drawing out fine tannins and a savoury depth without excess weight. The vineyard’s limestone base asserts itself through a graphite edge and firm spine, giving a wine that feels measured and composed rather than forceful.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2011 has an outgoing, modern and quite oaky bouquet with vanilla-tinged black fruit laced with iodine and blueberry. The palate is chewy and ripe on the entry, but it is missing some finesse and it feels over-egged towards the finish that does not articulate its sense of place with the clarity of other wines in this flight.
