Mugnier Nuits-St-Georges Clos de la Marechale 2010 is a full-bodied Burgundy red wine from the Premier Cru walled vineyard of Clos de la Marechale in the Nuits-St-Georges commune of the Côte de Nuits. Based at the Château de Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a family-owned estate producing some of the finest wines of the Côte de Nuits. This cuvée comes from the domaine’s monopole Clos de la Maréchale, a 9-hectare Premier Cru site within Nuits-Saint-Georges. The 2010 is available here in magnum format. "It is very interesting to taste the 2010 Nuits St. Georges Clos de la Marechale after the Grand Crus and the Amoureuses. It is easily the darkest and most tannic of the 2010s. The Marechale shows marvellous depth and the richness to match its decidedly powerful, virile personality. This has tons of fruit and muscle, yet also possesses the fabulous inner perfume and mineral-driven energy that is such a signature of the vintage. This is an impressive showing." Wine Advocate, 2011

Very deep, bright red. Sappy black cherry, raspberry, cola and licorice on the nose, plus a whiff of animal fur. Big, deep and chocolatey, with serious depth of black cherry and dark berry fruit. The big Nuits-Saint-Georges tannins are sexed up by high-toned oak spices on the impressively long finish. Jacques-Frederic Mugnier punches down the cap late in the fermentation, when the juice is almost dry and the skins have softened, an approach that he believes results in a steadier uptake of sugar in his wines.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2013

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
