Based at the Château de Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier is a family-owned estate producing some of the finest wines of the Côte de Nuits. This cuvée comes from the Domaine’s monopole Clos de la Maréchale, a 9-hectare Premier Cru site within Nuits-Saint-Georges. The 2015 vintage is widely hailed as one of the best in recent decades. Exceptional weather conditions resulted in ripe, healthy grapes, with producers able to harvest at the optimum time. The best 2015 red Burgundies are characterized by their rich fruit, excellent structure, and great aging potential. The vintage offers both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential, making it a true standout year.

Mugnier's 2015 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale is a terrific success in the 2015 vintage and is strongly reminiscent of the excellent 2005 rendition, opening in the glass with aromas of creamy cassis, ripe cherry, dark chocolate and grilled squab. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and sapid, with succulent acids, an ample chassis of rich tannins and excellent length. This is one of the rare cases of a great Burgundy from a great domaine that is available in some volume, and no one should fixate on Mugnier's Chambolles at the expense of this lovely Nuits.William Kelley27th April 2018
Vinous
The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de Maréchales 1er Cru has a vivid, captivating bouquet of blackberry, raspberry coulis and violet aromas that gain momentum with aeration. The mineral-driven palate is well balanced, displaying clever use of new oak, a fine bead of acidity and a classy, poised finish that lingers. Yet it declines in the glass, especially on the finish, indicating some taint. I will have to reserve judgment for now, but there is certainly a fine wine behind that TCA. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin1st November 2018

Precision and Beauty

Located the famous Château de Chambolle-Musigny, which has been owned by the Mugniers since the mid 19th century, Frédéric Mugnier took the hem at the family winery in 1985. Frédéric farms around 35 acres of vines, including plantings in some of Burgundy's most desirable crus, most notably the famous Les Amoureuses Premier Cru and Musigny Grand Cru. A notable recent addition to the portfolio is Clos de la Maréchale in Nuits-St-George, returned to the family stable after a 54 lease to Domaine Faiveley.

The winemaking is methodical and reasoned, reflecting Frédéric's training as an engineer - all fruit is destemmed before crushing, new oak is limited to 25% and all wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. Bucking the trend somewhat, Frédéric has decided not to pursue organic or biodynamic certification. While pesticide and herbicide-free since the mid-1990s, the domaine take a pragmatic approach to vineyard management rather than a dogmatic one.
