Nikolaihof Ried Im Weingebirge Smaragd Grüner Veltliner 2007 is a 100% Grüner Veltliner from one of Austria`s oldest wineries. This single-vineyard wine originates from the Ried Im Weingebirge site, known for its clay, loess and paragneiss soils. The biodynamic approach to viticulture ensures a natural fermentation using indigenous yeasts. This wine matures for around 18 months in large, neutral wooden casks in the estate’s historic cellar. The palate reveals a concentrated herbaceousness, underpinned by green fruit and a refreshing acidity, alongside notes of grapefruit and lentils.

The 2007 Ried Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd is clear, refined and aromatic on the nose that displays yellow plum and stewed apricot aromas intertwined with flinty and brioche notes. Full-bodied, round and elegant on the palate, this is an old-fashioned dry Spätlese style with fine mineral grip and a certain oxidation. The finish is savory and vital yet not really complex or long. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Archive Release 2024. Tasted in January 2025. - Stephan Reinhardt
