The inaugural release of Nicolas Catena Zapata was in 1997 and set a new standard of quality for premium wines from South America. It is made from over 200 separate microvinifications representing different rows of historic vines, altitudes and harvest times. The 2016 is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc, aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. This is an exceptional release of immense complexity and depth but is tightly wound and slightly austere in youth. If drinking soon, decanting well in advance of service is recommended.

The 2016 Nicolás Catena Zapata is a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc from Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira, Uco Valley. It was aged with painstaking precision and presents an alcohol content that reflects the cool year. Perhaps its best quality is the delicate nose of red fruit and floral aromas, which features blackcurrant, plum and lavender notes. Relaxed on the palate with thoroughly polished tannins and measured juice, the texture grows even silkier when the well-integrated freshness comes into play. A dusting of chalk makes a late entrance to coincide with the return of the fruity flavors. This is a layered, increasingly profound and nuanced wine.Joaquin Hidalgo1st November 2021

Pioneers of Fine Winemaking in Argentina

Over more than a century, the Catenas have evolved into the pre-eminent winemaking family in Argentina. The family’s history in wine goes back to 1902 when Nicola Catena purchased his first Mendoza vineyard. Much more recently, in 1997, his grandson, Nicolás Zapata pioneered the idea of fine wine from Argentina. Inspired by Bordeaux and Napa, he was the first person to ally Old World winemaking sensibilities to the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.

Bodega Catena Zapata is now managed by (Dr) Laura Catena, who continues to uphold the the family’s standard of excellence, harnessing the high-altitude terroir of the Andes through precision viticulture and a highly granular cellar regime to produce one of the finest wine portfolios in Argentina.

The flagship wine of the Catena portfolio is the Nicolás Catena Zapata cuvée in which ungrafted Malbec is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon from ‘grand cru’ multiple plots, all processed via 200 micro-vinifications which are then blended together and matured for 24 months in French oak, with a further two years in bottle before release.
