Napanook 2008 is a second wine from Dominus Estate, sourced from the Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, Napa Valley. The blend consists of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. It spent 18 months in French oak barrels, with 30% being new, allowing for subtle oak integration whilst highlighting the wine`s core characteristics. Aromas feature ripe plum, dark cherry and earthy undertones. The palate presents structured tannins and a lingering finish, reminiscent its parent wine, the flagship Dominus.

(93% cabernet sauvignon, 6% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc): Good bright red-ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry, redcurrant, tobacco, menthol and herbs. Offers a light touch to its dark fruit and herbal flavors but comes across as tight today, and not yet showing much pliancy or sweetness. In a cool, minty style but this clenched wine is still a baby. (I tasted this bottle just before press time in New York; my earlier sample at Dominus was lower-toned and did not display as much lift.)Stephen Tanzer1st May 2011

Dominus Estate

A First Growth in Napa

Along with Opus One, Dominus is one of the greatest examples of applying the Bordelais approach to winemaking to the great vineyards of the Napa Valley. Grapes are sourced from Yountville, specifically the historic Napanook vineyard, from which the winery's second wine takes its name.

The 'Grand Vin' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot - a classic Bordeaux blend. After vinification, around 30% of the wine is loaded into new oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. Initial releases of Dominus met with mixed reviews, but since the late 1990s, the winery has established itself as one of the greatest in America.
