Based in Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Georges Roumier is a leading Burgundy producer with approximately 12 hectares under vines. The domaine was formed in 1924 by George Roumier who at the time farmed his own vines but also worked as vineyard manager for Comte Georges de Vogüé. Since 1992 the estate has been overseen by the talented Christophe Roumier, the 3rd generation family winemaker. This particular cuvée is the domaine’s Musigny Grand Cru, one of the most mythical and collectable wines from Burgundy. 2009 enjoyed a harvest of healthy, ripe grapes, leading to well-structured red wines, packed with luscious fruit.
95 Vinous
Medium red. Very ripe, complex aromas of raspberry, coffee, chocolate, black olive, spices and minerals. Like liquid velvet in the mouth, displaying full ripeness but a restrained sweetness to the flavors of black raspberry, mocha and spices. A very large-scaled Musigny with outstanding building length. Like the Amoureuses, this seems to be shutting down in the bottle. In spite of the vinification with 100% whole clusters, there's a ripeness here that reminds me of the descriptions of the top '59s in their youth.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2012

A Icon of Fine Burgundy

One of Burgundy's most famous producers - founded in 1924 by Georges Roumier, the domaine was passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1957 and eventually on to his grandson Christophe in the early 1990s. Vines are either rented from family members or managed on a share-cropping basis and the cellar team operate a dynamic approach to winemaking, subtly altering their techniques depending on the vineyard and vintage. Some fruit is fully destemmed before fermentation while some is partially destemmed. A cool maceration takes place before fermentation, which takes place in wooden vats, and punch downs happen twice a day. Use of new oak is judicious - only around 20% for the village wines, 35% for the Premier Crus and 50% for the Grand Crus.

If Georges Roumier only produced Chambolle-Musigny, Bonnes Mares and Clos St Denis, the winery would still be considered one of the greatest in Burgundy, but their other-worldly Musigny Grand Cru elevates their status among the great wineries of France to legendary.
